Benton Institute for Broadband & Society Files Petition for Review

The Benton Institute for Broadband & Society filed a petition for review concerning the Federal Communications Commission's recently adopted rules aimed at preventing and eliminating digital discrimination. The following statement may be attributed to Benton Senior Counselor Andrew Jay Schwartzman:

"We are extremely pleased that the FCC has adopted new and powerful rules prohibiting digital discrimination.  We have nonetheless challenged two small, but important provisions of the rules today in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

"In a world that is increasingly reliant on connectivity to deliver education, healthcare, government services, and economic opportunities, few policy priorities are more important than ensuring equitable access to affordable, reliable, high-speed internet networks. We believe that these invaluable rules could be strengthened by seeking a judicial decision ordering the FCC to create a formal complaint procedure and to apply the full force of the rules to recipients of future grants from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration's Broadband, Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) Program. We trust that the Court will agree."

The Benton Institute for Broadband & Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to ensuring that all people in the U.S. have access to competitive, High-Performance Broadband regardless of where they live or who they are. We believe communication policy - rooted in the values of access, equity, and diversity - has the power to deliver new opportunities and strengthen communities.
