From URL to IRL: The Impact of Social Media on People of Color, Women, and LGBTQ+ Communities

UltraViolet, GLADD, Kairos, and Women's March commissioned YouGov to conduct a study of attitudes about hate speech, harassment, and misinformation among Americans. The research finds that respondents are broadly positive about a variety of aspects of the online experience—from the internet providing them a way to stay in touch with family and friends, space to pursue hobbies, and a voice. However, the plurality of respondents across all comparison groups are ambivalent about the risks of being online as well as on the internet's impact on mental health.

California, Texas, Florida tipped to get most BEAD funding

Now that the first version of the Federal Communications Commission’s new broadband map is out, providers across the country are likely scrambling to calculate how much money each state is set to get from the $42.5 billion Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) Program. If estimates put out by industry group ACA Connects are to be believed, California, Texas and Florida are set to get the most support from the program, while Massachusetts, Delaware and Rhode Island will reap the least. Cartesian figures offer a baseline for understanding where funding is likely to be concentrated.

But deceptive endorsement advertising, especially on social media platforms and in consumer review websites, can mislead consumers. The rapid evolution of social media and endorsement advertising has created new challenges, such as how to disclose financial relationships between social media influencers and brands properly. And the rise of new Web 3 platforms, including the metaverse, will likely create new questions, such as the rules around virtual celebrity endorsements.
