Broadband can be pricey. A federal program aims to help

Some internet connection providers in Rochester, NY, are ramping up service strength to meet demand. However, for some, internet options are plentiful but inaccessible due to cost. To connect, some utilize access to Wi-Fi from a nearby church to use the internet. To alleviate such issues, Monroe (NY) County Legislator Rachel Barnhart, who serves on the Monroe County's Taskforce on Broadband, said, "We have learned that programs offering reduced cost internet have low uptake because people are not aware they exist or because of red tape.

Rochester reaches deal with Greenlight, hopes to leverage terms to bridge digital divide

An agreement between the city and Greenlight Networks should help the local company expand into the Rochester neighborhoods. But obstacles remain with securing easements and access to utility poles. And while the pact was touted as a means to close the digital divide, it is uncertain how and when low-income customers might benefit. Greenlight's initial projects, already in planning with customers signed up, will be in Park Avenue and Cobbs Hill neighborhoods this summer and fall.

Verizon to expand high-speed internet in New York

Verizon eached a deal with state regulators to expand its high-speed internet services in New York and repair its existing telephone infrastructure. The agreement with the state Public Service Commission means Verizon expects to make its high-speed broadband network available to an additional 47,000 households across the state starting in 2018. The deal requires Verizon to expand fiber and hybrid fiber-copper networks to parts of upstate, the Hudson Valley and Long Island.
